Jay Bennett '67

Edina High School legend Jay Bennett led the Hornets to four State Titles in three years - two in football and two in basketball. In the four years he played football and basketball, his teams accumulated 116 wins and 1 loss. Jay was also the Captain of the 1967 baseball team and named All conference. Jay's leadership transcended sports as he also served as President of the Student Council in 1966 and 1967. Jay attend Dartmouth College where he played football. Jay still holds the Dartmouth record for the longest punt at 83 yards. Jay returned to the Twin Cities to build a successful career as both a lawyer and business professional 

Lindsay Hoyer '70

In the late 1960's Lindsay distinguished himself as a standout athlete and scholar. In 1968 and 1969, Lindsay played on four State Championship teams, two baseball, one football and one basketball. In 1970, Lindsay was named to the National Honor Society and awarded the Edina Optimist Achievement Award. Lindsay was All-State in both football and baseball, and was the Lake Conference Back of the Year in 1970. Lindsay attended the University of Minnesota where he played both football and baseball. Lindsay's college football career was cut short due to injury, but he helped lead the Gopher baseball team to two Big Ten Championships. In 1973, the Gopher baseball team finished third in the nation at the college World Series. Lindsay was drafted by the Minnesota Twins in 1970 and 1972. After coaching both football and baseball at several schools, Lindsay settled in the Twin Cities are with his wife and daughter and developed a career in Financial Services. 

John Donnelly '79

All American John Donnelly had the good fortune to play on the only Edina back-to-back State Championship hockey teams in 1978 and '79. The repeat title put an exclamation on Donnelly's senior year - one in which he was also named Metro Player of the Year. John left Edina to play hockey at Dartmouth College. In 1980 he was named Rookie of the year and won a gold medal on the All NCAA Tournament National Team. After playing briefly for the Calgary Flames, John decided to pursue a career in real estate development, and launched his own Commercial Real Estate firm, Donnelly Development. John lives in Edina with his wife and two daughters. 

Dave Maley '82

Hockey phenomenon David Maley won the 1982 Hockey State Championship with the Hornets, the 1983 NCAA Division 1 Hockey Championship with the University of Wisconsin Badgers and the 1986 Stanley Cup Championship with the Montreal Canadiens. Yet when asked about his favorite hockey memory, David responds, "I loved playing hockey late at night at Creek Valley. In all my years of playing since that time, I have never enjoyed or felt the way I did when I was a Creeker!" After retiring from professional hockey, David poured his passion into teaching hockey and founding the firm Rollin' Ice in San Jose, California. In 2007, David opened the largest indoor sports and fitness facility of its kind in North America called the Silver Creek Sportsplex. David and his wife live in San Jose with their three children.

Rick Raether '83

Rick remembers the winter and spring of 1983 with great pride as he experienced the rare opportunity to play on two teams competing in State Tournaments. The 1983 Edina basketball team won the Consolation round and the 1983 Baseball team won the State Championship title. Rick was named All-Conference in both sports. Regarding the success of the teams, Rick explains, "there were no superstar attitudes from any of us - just a willingness to share the spotlight and achieve a goal." Rick attended the University of Miami where he played on the 1985 College World Series Championship Baseball team. Rick was a Frist Team All American in 1985 and 1986, a Gold Spikes finalist and a former Division All-Time Saves Leader. In 1986 Rick was drafted by the Texas Rangers in the 6th round. Rick lives in Minnetrista with his wife and three children.

Casey Carroll '95

Scholar Athlete Casey Carroll Spark was a three sport standout athlete who graduated EHS with no less the 10 Varsity letters. The Athena Award winner played basketball, soccer and softball and earned All-State Honorable Mention in basketball and soccer. Casey vividly remembers all of the intense training that was miserable at the time, but so worth it in the midst of the season. Casey attended the University of North Dakota where she played on three Division II National Championship Basketball teams She served as Captain and was named to the NCC All-Academic Team. Casey lives in Grand Forks with her husband and son and works with Campus Crusade Ministry, and dominates the city league basketball program.

Bob Hoecherl, Coach and Mathematics Teacher

University of Minnesota graduate Robert Hoecherl arrived at Edina in 1968 with three Big Ten medals the pommel horse, a year of teaching experience and a great deal of enthusiasm. By the middle 1970s Coach Hoecherl launched a Boys' Gymnastics program, and was coaching both Edina East and West simultaneously. Coach Hoecherl led Edina to three Gymnastics State Championships in 1982, 1984 and 1990, and guided 14 individuals to All-American status. Two teams earned All American status, 8 individuals won State Titles and Brian Meeker became an Olympian. Bob was named State Coach of the Year twice and in 1991 was elected to the National High School Coach of the Year. In 2006, Bob was inducted into the University of Minnesota Men's Gymnastics Hall of Fame. Bob and his wife Mary raised three children.
